Oct. 29, 2015 – Vancouver Island University’s bid to host the 2016 CCAA Badminton National Championships has been approved by the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association.

The VIU Mariners of the PACWEST will host the Championships in Nanaimo, BC, from March 2-5, 2016.

“VIU will do an excellent job of hosting this year’s CCAA Badminton National Championship,” said Jordan Richey, the CCAA Badminton Convenor. “They have had a strong program over the past few years and have the players, coaches and administration staff that are needed to host such a prestigious event.”

Last spring, VIU hosted the CCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship. They last hosted CCAA Badminton in 2004.

“VIU is thrilled to be hosting the 2016 CCAA Badminton National Championships in March,” said VIU Athletics Director Bruce Hunter, who himself participated at the National Championships in 1980 and 1981. “VIU and the City of Nanaimo aspire to be excellent hosts and will put on a Championship that the competitors, coaches and fans will remember for years to come,” said Hunter.

All participating conferences have top caliber players that should make the Championships very competitive and exciting according to Richey.

“With several players who were at last year’s Nationals back with their respective programs, it is going to be an exciting year of CCAA Badmintonculminating with CCAA Nationals at VIU in March,” he said.

The CCAA is a national sport organization enriching the academic experiences of student-athletes through intercollegiate sport.
