Canada Winter Games Recap Day 5

Team Event Results

Today’s best tie goes to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, hands down.

It began with a three game Women’s Singles match between Nova Scotia’s Renae Shewan and New Brunswick’s Sneha Desai. Both athletes played a great physical game, but Desai took it in the end, 18-21, 21-17, 21-14.

Jacob and Sam Cutler from Team Nova Scotia took the next match, defeating Francois Dionne and Brandon Howland in a real squeaker - 21-14, 19-21, 21-16. Fans in the stands did not stop cheering for a moment.

By the time Mixed Doubles rolled around, the heat was on. Both teams had their eye on advancing to fight for fifth place in the finals, and neither was willing to budge. Nova Scotia’s Renee Lise Leblanc-Proctor and Sunil Ruparella took on New Brunswick’s Pascal Roy-Gregoire and Sophie Skinner in another marathon three-gamer that ended in Nova Scotia’s favour, 21-23, 21-12, 21-19.

Team New Brunswick came clawing back to tie things up with a win in Women’s Doubles. Excellent communication and fearless performances characterized this high octane match that ended in a 21-19, 21-14 win for Samantha Rogers and Shuaijin Wang over Nova Scotia’s Sarah Newman and Dana Pothier.

In the final match of the night, Nova Scotia’s Kevin Stadnyk and New Brunswick’s Zhengyao Zhang took to the court for an all-out battle. Parents and teammates had been at the venue since 9:00am, but they spent every moment on their feet cheering, waving flags, and giving as much blood, sweat and tears as the athletes as they willed them to succeed. It was hard not to be moved by such a show of team spirit from both provinces. Stadnyk and Zhang exchanged wild rallies that elicited gasps and cheers from the stands, and while both fought hard, Zhang came out on top, winning the match 21-13, 21-12. Both provinces cheered loud, and celebrated having played their very best badminton at the Games.

As expected, Ontario swept through their matches against Team BC in a decisive 5-0 victory. Alberta toppled second seed Quebec in a close 3-2 tie, and will face Ontario for the gold medal match at 1:00pm. BC will take on la belle province for bronze at 1:00pm, leaving New Brunswick and Manitoba to fight for 5th and 6th, Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia for 7th and 8th, Nunavut and Newfoundland and Labrador for 9th and 10th, and Northwest Territories in 11th place.
