Canada Winter Games Badminton Day 1 Recap

Ontario and Alberta are leading the individual competition so far, with Quebec and British Columbia close behind. Most seeded players passed into the quarter finals with ease, but that did not mean the day was short of excitement.

After an exhausting five day journey to reach Prince George from his hometown of Grise Fiord (Canada’s northernmost community), Team Nunavut’s Jayko Ageeakok continued to epitomize commitment to his sport. Ageeakok fought hard in his Men’s Singles match against Quebec’s Paul-Antoine Dostie-Guindon, and against number two seeds Andrew D’Souza and Sergiy Shatenko of Ontario in Men’s Doubles. While he didn’t win, Ageeakok was all smiles as teammates from Nunavut cheered him on from the sidelines.

Nadianie Ouaqouaq-Bergeron of Quebec went the distance with Team BC’s Samantha Zheng in an epic Women’s Singles match in the morning. After the first two games ended 21-10 and 18-21, the final game was won by Ouaqouaq-Bergeron in an agonizingly close 21-19.

Nova Scotia twins Jacob and Sam Cutler’s Mens Doubles match against 5/8 seeds Ian Abbot and Cam Jensen from Team Saskatchewan also went three exciting rounds. The duo from the Maritimes eventually came out on top, and are now the only athletes from Nova Scotia still in the competition for individual events.

Rachel Honderich of Team Ontario was a dominant force on the courts, though her time there was brief. She made quick work of her first match, defeating Jane Nakashuk 21-1 and 21-4. Honderich then went on finish her second match in equally short order; Manitoba’s Kathryne Desautels put up a valiant effort, but Honderich won the match 21-5 and 21-2.

Quarter finals begin Wednesday morning at 9:00am. Expect the same loud cheers and energy as the teams from each Province and Territory cheer on their friends!
