Badminton Test Event - Calling for Spectators!

March 20, 2014

The North Central Junior, Open and Masters Badminton Tournament is coming to Prince George on March 28-30. Players ages 6 – 86 will be playing in novice and competitive events. This Test Event for the 2015 Canada Winter Games promises to be a weekend filled with exciting  matches for local spectators to take in.

New to this year’s tournament is para-singles wheelchair badminton. The sport was introduced to Northern BC in a series of sessions in November, 2013 and was well-received by the badminton community. For this tournament Para-singles players can be any age, able-bodied or not. The sport chairs are state of the art, gliding smoothly and turning on a pivot, however moving back and forth while trying to swing a racket with one arm is extremely challenging. The sport is new to Canada but is recognized internationally. Para-badminton has progressed to the second stage of application for inclusion into the 2020 Paralympic Games. Anyone wanting to check out this sport should head over to the Charles Jago Northern Sports Centre on the morning of Saturday, March 29.

Also on the Saturday morning  the Under 19 doubles will be getting underway and the Parent-Child competition will be in full swing. Players may be as young as 6. According to parent Jody MacKinnon, “the family competition is a blast! It includes a lot of high fives to congratulate each other for good plays mixed with a few dirty looks and bouts of frustration (from the children) when their parents don’t make the shot. The parent-child competition is a wonderful opportunity to introduce young badminton players to competition in a friendly and supportive environment.”

If that is not enough to draw a crowd to the Test Event, the Tournament Organizing Committee has another card up their sleeve. The Northern Sports Centre has kindly donated two adult memberships each valued at $600 as draw prizes. Lisa Davison, Chair of the Tournament Organizing Committee and Sport Leader for Badminton CWG explains that, “Everyone who comes to watch the Test Event can enter for a chance to win. On top of that we know that once you have had a taste of watching a badminton competition you will be hooked and we can’t wait to see everyone again to celebrate the sport next February at the Canada Winter Games.”
