Badminton in the big leagues

March 14, 2014

The North Central Junior, Open and Masters Badminton Tournament is coming to Prince George on March 28-30. Players ages 6 – 86 will be playing singles, doubles, mixed doubles, parent-child and para-singles wheelchair badminton in novice and competitive events. This Test Event for the 2015 Canada Winter Games promises to be a stellar activity for players and spectators alike.

The Organizing Committee has been working for months getting ready for this event, pulling out all the stops to set up an international field of play for the athletes from northern BC and Alberta. For the first time ever, portable courts on loan from Badminton BC will be set up in Prince George at the Charles Jago Northern Sports Centre. The Committee is duplicating the conditions in which the national team is playing and testing the equipment and venue for the Canada Winter Games.

Major officials from Badminton Canada are coming from Yukon, Alberta and BC to officiate the Test Event and to train local officials. Over the course of the weekend the organizers hope to train dozens of officials gearing them up for the Canada Winter Games, where badminton is one of the 19 official sports. The committee is looking for volunteers, in particular officials ready to be trained by some of the best. No experience is necessary.

Lisa Davison, Tournament Organizing Committee Chair and Sport Leader for Badminton CWG, predicts that 80-100 athletes of all levels of experience will be playing at this Test Event. Lisa explains that ever since her “experience at the 2011 CWG's in Halifax [she has] been waiting on pins & needles for our Test Event & 2015.” “I'm excited about showcasing our sport competitively, projecting the energy that I witnessed in 2011 and celebrating the fast-paced and exciting sport of badminton,” says Davison.

Registration for the tournament is open until March 23. The Committee is still looking for volunteers to assist with the event. Please contact Lisa Davison for more information lisa@northcourt.ca
