Canadian team guaranteed a six medal haul

Canada’s badminton team had a successful Monday at the 2015 Pan Am Games as all team members made it into the semi-finals. As there is no third place match in the competition, athletes making it to this round are guaranteed a minimum of a bronze medal.

No. 1-seeded Michelle Li defeated No. 6-seed Lohaynny Vicente of Brazil, 21-7, 21-18. Earlier, Li and doubles partner, Rachel Honderich, defeated Cynthia Gonzales/Haramara Gaitan of Mexico, 21-11, 21-9. In her singles match, No. 4-seeded Honderich defeated No. 5-seed Silva Fabiana, of Brazil, 21-16, 21-10.

In men’s singles, Canada’s Andrew D’Souza defeated No. 4-seed Sattawat Pongnairat of the USA, 21-14, 21-10.In women’s doubles, the pair of Alex Bruce and Phyllis Chan defeated Luz Zornoza/ Katherine Winder of Peru, 21-16, 23 -10. In Mixed Doubles, No.2 seeded Bruce continued her success with partner Toby Ng as they defeated Ernesto Reyes/Melissa Perez of Cuba, 21-8, 21-12.

All Canadians will play Tuesday July 14 with the winners moving into the gold medal matches on Wednesday and Thursday:

·        Michelle Li/Rachel Honderich facing  Eva Lee/Paula Obanana of the USA in women’s doubles at 10:00

·        Toby Ng/Alex Bruce facing Alex Tjong/Lohaynny Vincente of Brazil in mixed doubles at 11:00

·        Alex Bruce/Phyllis Chan facing  No. 2-seed Luana Vincente/Lohaynny Vincente of Brazil in women’s doubles at 17:00

·        Rachel Honderich facing No. 2-seed  Iris Wang of the USA in women’s singles at 17:30

·        Andrew D’Souza facing No. 1-seed Osleni Guerrero of Cuba in men’s Singles at 18:30

·        Michelle Li facing  No. 3-seed Jamie Subandhi of the USA in women’s singles at 19:00
