2015 Pan Am Games - Canadians into quarter-finals

Canada’s badminton team had a successful day Sunday at the 2015 Pan Am Games as all team members made it into the quarter-finals.

Canada’s badminton team had a successful day Sunday at the 2015 Pan Am Games as all team members made it into the quarter-finals.

No. 1-seeded Michelle Li defeated unseeded Fatima Fuentes Centeno of El Salvador, 21-4, 21-10. Earlier, Li and doubles partner, Rachel Honderich, defeated the Guatemalan pair 21-4, 21-8 in the round of 16. In her singles match, No. 4-seeded Honderich defeated unseeded Sabrina Solis of Mexico 21-13, 21-9.

In men’s singles, Canada’s Andrew D’Souza defeated Mario Cuba of Peru 21-8, 21-9 in the round of 16.

In women’s doubles, the pair of Alex Bruce and Phyllis Chan were pushed hard in the second set by the Chilean pair of Ting Ting Chou and Camila Macaya but ultimately defeated them 21-11, 23 -21.

In Mixed Doubles, No.2 seeded Bruce continued her success with partner Toby Ng as they defeated the Peruvian pair of Andres Corpancho and Luz Zornoza 21-19, 21-16.

All Canadians will play Monday July 13 with:

·        Rachel Honderich facing No. 5-seed  Silva Fabiana, of Brazil in women’s singles at 10:00

·        Toby Ng/Alex Bruce facing Ernesto Reyes/Melissa Perez of Cuba in mixed doubles at 10:30

·        Michelle Li/Rachel Honderich facing  Cynthia Gonzales/Haramara Gaitan of Mexico in women’s doubles at 11:30

·        Alex Bruce/Phyllic Chan facing Luz Zornoza/ Katherine Winder of Peru in Women’s Doubles at 17:00

·        Andrew D’Souza facing No. 4-seed Sattawat Pongnairat of the USA in Men’s Singles at 18:00

·        Michelle Li facing  No. 6-seed Lohaynny Vicente of Brazil in women’s singles at 19:00
