Canada at Universiade 2015 Team Event

GWANGJU, South Korea (Team Canada) – The badminton team tournament for Canada was stopped in the relegation round by Great Britain on Tuesday at the Summer Universiade. Canada lost the match by a score of 3-1.

After easily defeating Botswana on Monday by a 5-0 score, Canada finished its group phase by facing Germany on Tuesday morning. Against the powerful European team, the Canadians took a 4-1 loss. The one victory came in women’s singles, where Stéphanie Pakenham (Université Laval) won in two sets, 21-9 and 21-10.

 

Placed in relegation by way of its second placing in the pool, the Red and White faced Great Britain. Pakenham again was the point winner for Canada. She prevailed in the singles match with scores of 21-8, 16-21, and 21-15.

 

The Canadians will begin competition in the individual events on Friday, July 10.

 

About the Summer Universiade


The Summer Universiade is an international multi-sport event that takes place every two years and is second only to the Olympic Games in the number of participating athletes and countries. The Universiade is open to competitors who are at least 17 and less than 28 years of age as of January 1 in the year of the Games. Participants must be full-time students at a post-secondary institution (university, college, CEGEP) or have graduated from a post-secondary institution in the year preceding the event.
