Tuesday, May 12, 2015 — TORONTO — On Tuesday, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and Badminton Canada announced the athletes who have been nominated to represent Canada at the TORONTO 2015 Pan American Games from July 10 to 26 this summer.

The badminton athletes who will represent Canada at the TORONTO 2015 Games are:

Leading the Team is Michelle Li who is currently ranked 16 in the world. She has an Olympic Games under her belt and is a two-time Pan Am Games champion, capturing double gold at Guadalajara 2011 in singles and doubles with partner Alex Bruce.

Canada is the badminton powerhouse in the Pan Am world, holding 43 of the 100 medals awarded in the history of Pan Am Games, including 16 gold, 16 silver and 11 bronze. At the Guadalajara 2011 Pan Am Games, Canada came out on top with three gold, one silver and two bronze medals. The objective of Canada’s National Badminton Team is to maintain this performance by remaining atop of the medal standings at TORONTO 2015.

The badminton competition will take place at the Atos Markham Pan Am / Parapan Am Centre from July 11 to 16. There will be five events: women’s singles, women’s doubles, men’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles.

Canada will field the largest team in its Pan American Games history with more than 700 athletes expected to be named to the Team at the Games in Toronto. With TORONTO 2015 providing a “Home Games” experience, as well as a number of qualification opportunities for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, these Games will provide a tremendous experience for Canada’s high performance athletes.

Prior to being named to the final Canadian Pan American Team, all nominations are subject to approval by the Canadian Olympic Committee’s Team Selection Committee following its receipt of nominations by all National Sport Federations towards the end of June 2015.
