Canada Winter Games Recap Day 4

Who has the best cheer? Who can cheer the loudest? Who can wear the most face paint without smudging it on the courts? These were the important questions of the first day of the team event.

Nova Scotia definitely dominated the decibels for the first half of the day. They may have lost every match to British Columbia and then to Quebec, but they packed the stands with blue and stamped and cheered and blew horns and rang cowbells and gave their athletes every ounce of support and encouragement they could muster.  It was an inspiring thing to watch.

Team Nunavut shout be especially proud of their performance at the Canada Winter Games today. Athletes in the territories often have less access to coaching, competition, and player development possibilities than their southern counterparts, putting them at an unfair disadvantage in national sporting events. This did not deter Nunavut. Jenny Mosele and Jane Nakashuk went a full three games in their Women’s Doubles match against Team New Brunswick’s Sophie Skinner and Shuaijin Wang and only narrowly missed a win. Later in the afternoon, Team Nunavut swept the competition with an astounding 5-0 victory over Northwest Territories. The joy in their faces was a sight to behold.

Ontario continues to be the team to beat in the Canada Winter Games badminton competition. They will face Team Saskatchewan in the quarterfinals at 9:00am, and – if victorious – will face the winner of Manitoba versus British Columbia in the semis. Alberta will square off against Nova Scotia in the quarterfinals, and Quebec will face fellow francophones New Brunswick before advancing to the semifinals.
