Canada Winter Games Recap Day 3

In the first Ontario versus Ontario match, top seed Rachel Honderich faced second seed Brittney Tam. Honderich won the first game, and for a while it looked like Brittney would take the second, but a comeback by Honderich sealed the match in her favour, 21-16, 23-21.

Andrew D’Souza and Jason Ho-Shue were the next Ontarians to duke it out for a gold medal. The two friends, who had joked about each other’s weaknesses in a TSN interview the day before, were calm and calculated once they reached the court. Top seed D’Souza took the first game easily 21-11 but Ho-Shue won the next game 21-12. After several heated rallies, Ho-Shue brought home the third game with a 21-17 victory.

The Women’s Doubles gold medal match was a real spectacle to watch. Team Quebec’s Vicky Girard and Alexandra Mocanu faced off against their teammates Anne-Julie Beaulieu and Nadianie Ouaqouaq-Bergeron in a spirited display of athleticism. Beaulieu and Ouaqouaq-Bergeron won the gold after three games, 17-21, 21-15, and 21-11.

Team Ontario returned to the stage in Mixed Doubles, with Nyl Yakura and Brittney Tam pitted against Joshua Hurlburt-Yu and Vivian Kwok for the gold medal. Yakura and Tam won the match 22-24, 21-17, 21-8.

After a few brief minutes to recharge, Yakura and Hurlburt-Yu returned to the court – together, this time – for Men’s Doubles. Their opponents, 3/4 seeds, Andy Ko and Nathan Osborne, were well-prepared for the challenge. Team Ontario’s Yakura and Hurlburt-Yu won the match 21-18, 21-19 and secured another gold for their province.

Highlights of the bronze medal matches included a rowdy match between Team BC’s James Ho and Team Manitoba’s Kevin Barkman that went a full three games. Ho won the bronze with 21-13, 18-21, 21-7 victories over Barkman. The Women’s Singles bronze medal match was also a real nail biter. Team BC’s Qingzi Ouyang played a great game against Team Alberta’s Kyleigh O’Donaghue, and while the two were fairly evenly matched, O’Donaghue took the bronze by two points with a final 21-18, 9-21, 23-21 win.
