Results from 1st Canadian Para-Badminton Championships

For Immediate Release.

MONCTON, NB – Badminton Canada is proud to announce the completion of the 1st Canadian Para-Badminton Championships today in Moncton, New Brunswick. As an inaugural event, the Championships had athletes representing 6 provinces across the country – New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. A first of its style, 3 individual events took place during the Championships: Wheelchair Singles, Standing Lower Body Singles and Short Stature Singles.

Here’s are the results:

Wheelchair Singles

Gold Medal – Bernard Lapointe – St. Leonard, NB

Silver Medal – Luke Millar – Calgary, AB 

Bronze Medal – Joanne Lee – Markham, ON 

 

Lower Body Singles

Gold Medal – Pascal Lapointe – Montreal, QC

Silver Medal – Olivia Meier – Winnipeg, MB

Bronze Medal –Muhammad Ali Rafic – Toronto, ON

 

Short Stature

Gold Medal – Wyatt Lightfoot – Assiniboia, SK

Silver Medal – Aaron Keith – Pickering, ON

 

For many of the athletes present, it was their first time playing in front of such a large audience. “I was a little nervous in my first match.” indicated Wyatt Lightfoot, Short Stature National Singles Champion from Saskatchewan. “I have never played in front of a crowd this big before, but once the match started I was able to focus on winning the gold medal’.

In 2014, the International Paralympic Committee announced that badminton (para-badminton) was selected as one of the sports for the 2020 Paralympics Games in Tokyo. “Badminton Canada has set the goal of winning a medal in Tokyo.” stated Cindy Bruce, chair of Badminton Canada’s Para Badminton Committee. “This championship was an important first step in reaching that goal. We look forward to building a world class program for our para-badminton athletes over the coming years.”  

Top level badminton will continue in Moncton with the Canadian Junior and U23 National Championships set for the Semi-Finals today and Finals events tomorrow at the University of Moncton (CEPS).
